Chocolate

Chocolate is one of my weaknesses and learning to consume it in moderation has been difficult for me. Chocolate is often seen as a dieter's number one item to avoid, but there are benefits to consuming chocolate, more specifically dark chocolate.

The main fat in chocolate is a stearic acid. Stearic acids are saturated fats that have been known to not raise blood cholesterol levels. Dark chocolate contains phytochemicals. The phytochemicals in dark chocolate are classified as flavonoids, which act as antioxidants to decrease inflammation, reduce plaque buildup in arteries, increase HDL-cholesterol levels, deactivate carcinogens, and inhibit cancer development.

While it does have benefits, chocolate should be consumed in moderation. I eat chocolate almost every day and my favorite is dark chocolate. Limit yourself to about one ounce of chocolate per day. Dark chocolate seems to contain the most health benefit so try to choose this option when possible!
