Coffee

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world and recent research shows that it may contain health benefits. Regular coffee consumption may be associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Coffee contains antioxidants that may prevent cell damage that causes type 2 diabetes, but it is the coffee, and not the caffeine that has this protective benefit, decaf coffee seems to possess the same properties.

These antioxidants have also been found to prevent inflammation which reduces the risk of heart disease and other inflammatory diseases in post-menopausal women. To get this benefit, it is recommended to consume 1 to 3 cups of coffee per day, whether it be caffeinated or decaffeinated.

For men, coffee offers a protective benefit from stroke when 8 cups or more are consumed per day. Since coffee does contain a fairly significant amount of caffeine, I recommend making at least 4 cups of coffee decaf if you are trying to get this amazing benefit.

Daily coffee consumption seems to protect against alcohol-related cirrhosis and liver cancer. Coffee consumption appears to protect us from many causes of death but it can have negative effects. Too much caffeine can have negative effects on blood pressure. My recommendation is to limit your full strength coffee to 3-4 cups per day and make the rest decaf.
